Abstract
The use of land in the Swedish city of Lund is a question that has attracted a lot of attention in the last couple of years. The city is in need of expansion but ideas of where and how to accomplish this has differed until the release of the latest general plan which dictates that all major developments should be realized by densification. The city is surrounded by high value farmland which needs to be preserved. In light of the issue concerning our impact on the environment, the question is raised as to what impact the shape of a city may have on sustainability and what similarities and conflicts can appear between concept and planning. The theoretical framework used as a base for discussion is a combination of the concepts Compact city... (More)
The use of land in the Swedish city of Lund is a question that has attracted a lot of attention in the last couple of years. The theoretical framework used as a base for discussion is a combination of the concepts Compact city and Transit oriented development as well as environmental sustainability. A case study of the densification project Öresundsvägen is conducted by investigating official planning documents from the city of Lund. These are analysed at using open coding to find out what is being said in relation to words such as densification and sustainability. The results show a couple of advantages a compact city has towards environmental sustainability. It is important in light of the previous research on the concepts to discuss these. The advantages are not guaranteed phenomena and need additional work to be able to contribute to environmental sustainability. The similarities between the two concepts: Compact city and Transit oriented development are many but there are some conflicts as well. The conclusion is that densification may very well serve as a planning strategy working towards environmental sustainability but there are factors to keep in mind when working with it. (Less)
