- Abstract
- The original human form. Neutrality.
Adam, created from dust, become
his own, and Eve, created from one
of Adam’s ribs, and ad-on to the
original human. Or so the creation
myth states, in cultures based on
Abrahamic religions.
Masculinity is a social construction,
shaped by history and traditions,
and varying across different cultures
and time periods. Just like femininity
masculinity has a framework. In
this project it is a framework based
on western Swedish values. Just like
with femininity it strengthens, but
also harms people and societies in
different ways. In a quite fascinating
sense the position of masculinity
and men in society is not very
discussed and instead normalized.

Compared to femininity and the
question of what it means to be
a female there is no masculine
movement. Masculinity has for
a long time not been questioned
or seen as an issue, though this is
changing, slowly, since the later part
of the 20th century. To not question
a structure leads to stagnation of
that structure, and the stagnation of
an as big of a social construction as
masculinity has negative effects.
As a part of our lives we come across
gender constructions and we see its
effect on a both humanitarian levels
and on the world as a whole, since
human behaviour effects all living
things and nature. What recently
has caught mine, and many others
attention is examples in social me-
dia and politics that questions the
current western stereotype of what
masculinity is. Which makes one
wonder; What is it? Why? What are
the affects? And how is it reflected
in products and design. (Less)
