- There has been an increase in emergency preparedness measures aimed at individual households in the recent years in Sweden. The reason for this is that the Swedish government have deemed Swedish households' preparedness to be deficient and in need of improvement in order to better meet the risks of the modern society. It has been done through a number preparedness-raising campaigns. - There has been an increase in emergency preparedness measures aimed at individual households in the recent years in Sweden. The reason for this is that the Swedish government have deemed Swedish households' preparedness to be deficient and in need of improvement in order to better meet the risks of the modern society. It has been done through a number preparedness-raising campaigns. Risk communication is a large part of the campaigns and this thesis aims to investigate how risk communication can be made more efficient and thus contribute to a stronger preparedness in Swedish households and to investigate how risk communication is currently being conducted. This was done by investigating how risk communication between public actors and individual households is currently conducted and how it can be improved to strengthen household preparedness for major social disruptions. The results of the thesis show that an increased amount of risk communication efforts should be carried out by the municipalities in order to maintain the public risk awareness. NGO’s should further be more involved in society's emergency preparedness. Targeted communication to reach out to vulnerable households should also be carried out to a greater extent and that National communication initiatives, such as the brochure “Om krisen eller kriget kommer”, seems to be a good way to strengthen household crisis preparedness, both short and long term.
