- Abstract
- The brutal and inhuman strategies of violence that characterizes Boko Haram and the Islamic State (IS) have resulted in them being classified as two of the world’s most lethal terrorist organizations. In the study of terrorism, the role of women has often been marginalised, neglected or excluded. Terrorism has hence often been portrayed as an exclusively male phenomenon. Despite this widespread belief empirics have shown that women participate in a number of terrorist organizations, filling various roles to a diverse extent and magnitude. This paper investigates, with Martha Crenshaw’s instrumental framework, the incorporation of women into Boko Haram and IS. The purpose is to shed light on the strategic roles of women in these terrorist organizations. The findings of the study suggests that the roles of women in Boko Haram and IS are highly strategic and critical in the advancement towards the organization’s goals. This is due to the fact that women implies several strategic advantages in terror and are therefore used as effective assets and instruments to these groups. Furthermore, this study refutes the perception that terrorism solely is a masculine phenomenon and argues that the influence of female terrorists should not be underestimated. Lastly, this study argues that Crenshaw’s instrumental theory has good explanatory value. (Less)
