- Abstract
- This thesis examines the construction of Nordic security policies in order to understand the similarities and differences between the Nordic states’ approaches to security issues. Using quantitative and qualitative methods, it tests theoretical assumptions about the role of ideology, strategic culture, and a Nordic security culture in the creation of security policy. By examining several empirical consequences, the thesis finds evidence for... (More)
- This thesis examines the construction of Nordic security policies in order to understand the similarities and differences between the Nordic states’ approaches to security issues. Using quantitative and qualitative methods, it tests theoretical assumptions about the role of ideology, strategic culture, and a Nordic security culture in the creation of security policy. The study compares similarities and differences between the larger social-democratic and liberal-conservative parties, using data from party manifestos since the end of the Cold War, as well as analyses of the Swedish and Norwegian foreign policy declarations and debates in 2007/08 and 2017/18. By examining several empirical consequences, the thesis finds evidence for ideological and national preferences in regard to security policies, whereas the Nordic security culture appears to play a subordinate role. The thesis moves on to discuss the possibility of distinctive ideological and national security cultures in the Nordics, concluding that different security cultures, in various degrees, have an impact on the security preferences of parties. Subsequently, they also affect the states’ approaches to security issues to various extents. Finally, this thesis exemplifies the need for further research regarding what causes different security cultures to surface. (Less)
