Abstract
The aim of the study was to examine gender differences regarding the activity on Instagram, and the correlation between mental health and Instagram usage amongst social work students at Lund University. The study was conducted through a survey methodology, with a cross-sectional analysis based on a questionnaire consisting of 25 questions. The survey was distributed to the students’ emails via Sunet Survey, an online survey program that complies with GDPR and is approved by Lund University. More specifically, the study aimed to identify whether men and womens’ Instagram usage and motives for Instagram usage differentiated and if their usage affected them negatively. The study was conducted through a survey methodology, with a cross-sectional analysis based on a questionnaire consisting of 25 questions. The survey was distributed to the students’ emails via Sunet Survey, an online survey program that complies with GDPR and is approved by Lund University. Theory explaining gender theory and symbolic interactionism were used for the analysis. The study showed differences between men and women in their activity and on their well-being. Women considered that feelings of happiness and anxiety were primarily connected with their Instagram usage, while happiness was detected as the prime feeling amongst men. The study also showed a majority believing that Instagram had a negative influence on other peoples’ lives, which concludes a paradox – where the respondents consider Instagram affecting others negatively but not themselves. Further studies need to be conducted in order to establish whether there’s a link between frequent Instagram usage and poor mental health. (Less)
