The overarching purpose of this study and the thesis is to contribute to the discourse about the potential for social projects and non-governmental organisations working with art-education in a post-colonial and newly democratised country like Brazil to contribute to human development leading to social change.
I used the characteristic methods for ethnographies; observations, participant observations and interviews but also visual sociology/photography.
The discussion was drawn by analysing what impacts the these projects have on the self-confidence and personal development of the participants, social integration and local improvements within the community in which they are active, cultural consciousness and combating racism and prejudices towards the afro-Brazilian population. The conclusion drawn from this is that there are many positive effects of these kinds of programs in several areas of human development but not without difficulties regarding effectiveness, financing, and governmental support.
