Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
Abstract
This study aimed to examine how people who practice bdsm (bondage, disci-pline, dominance, submission, sadism, masochism) experienced therapists’ responses when bdsm was mentioned in therapy. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 27 bdsm practitioners who had been to therapy. The interviews were analysed via inductive thematic analysis. Three themes were identified. Participants could feel the need to mention bdsm as a matter of direct or indirect relevance to therapy, as an im-portant aspect of their lives, or in order to test the therapist’s response. However, bringing up bdsm was associated with fears of negative response. Participants reported negative experiences where therapists expressed prejudice, judgement or... (More)

However, bringing up bdsm was associated with fears of negative response. Participants reported negative experiences where therapists expressed prejudice, judgement or pathologizing attitudes regarding bdsm, failed to contain their own emotions, questioned the indi-viduals about bdsm, or avoided or focused excessively on the topic. Positive experi-ences were characterised by non-judgment, asking questions centred on the individual, and stimulating a joint exploration of matters relevant to the person. Participants thought that therapists needed more knowledge of bdsm, and they provided several examples of areas to learn more about. Results were discussed in relation to theory on minority stress. Bdsm practitioners’ experiences of therapy were related to those of lgbtq people. Tentative recommendations were provided for bdsm-competent therapy. (Less)
