- Abstract
- This thesis explores the aesthetic language of natural history collecting in relation to art, by analyzing Kristoffer Palmgren’s bioart piece Superman in a semiotic and discourse analytic context.
The artwork itself consists of eight molded fists, overgrown by microbes taken from wild trees. The fists are individually encased in glass boxes that are placed on top of one another. This presentation is visually reminiscent of the glass cases or cabinets used to contain and show collections of natural history specimen. Through a semiotic reading, the visual signs of Superman are investigated in order to pinpoint what ties the artwork to artistic and natural historic discourses, while its’ contextual coherencies are described through discourse...
