Abstract
This master thesis was performed at the company BAE Systems Hägglunds AB,
Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. Hägglunds has its main market within the defense industry
and is the developers and manufacturers of the combat vehicle CV90 and the terrain
vehicle BvS10. Since a few years back, Hägglunds has investigated the potential to
apply its technologies from these vehicles to a product for the civil market. The result
of this investigation is that Hägglunds wants to develop a forwarder. A forwarder is a
forestry vehicle that generally is driven on wheels and Hägglunds´ idea is to replace
these wheels with track systems. The main component in this track system is the skid

forestry vehicle that generally is driven on wheels and Hägglunds´ idea is to replace
these wheels with track systems. The main component in this track system is the skid
girder and this is the component that forms the basis for this project.
The purpose of this project is to develop the detailed design for the skid girder. The
design has to meet the objectives of minimizing the weight and adapt the geometry to
the manufacturing processes at the company.
All together the project is divided into five working areas: rear part of the skid girder,
front part of the skid girder, the interface between the rear and front part, connection
between control arms and skid girder and connection between backing roller and skid
girder. The reason for having the skid girder in a rear and front part is that the
transmission system and electric motor (driving components for the tracks) are
positioned in the front part of skid girder. This means that the interface between skid
girder and driving components must meet more complex requirements that makes
internal components accessible for assembly and service.
The work procedures have differed between the different working areas. In some of
the areas a lot of the conditions where set and in some more preparatory work had to
be done. Some of the relevant subjects treated in this project are generating concept,
evaluating concepts, FE-analysis, calculation of screw dimensions and cross-sectional
analysis of beams.
The weight of the finished skid girder is low and most of the working areas can be
produced within the company without creating a need for new production equipment.
Two of the working areas can advantageously be casted and therefore they can´t be
produced within the company. Our recommendations are that a further analysis of
casting processes should be done with the motivation that more (Less)
