Abstract
This thesis addresses a project conducted in collaboration with Volvo Car
Corporation, to develop a new concept for luggage covers in car luggage
compartments. The purpose was to find a new concept, with focus on user
friendliness and environmental sustainability, which automatically opens up for
easy loading of the luggage compartment. The fabric in today's solution is made of
polyester and PVC, a disputed material. It is also examined how to replace PVC
with a suitable material.
Approximately 30 different concepts were generated and evaluated against today's
luggage cover, four of which were evaluated again in a thorough analysis. The

This thesis addresses a project conducted in collaboration with Volvo Car
Corporation, to develop a new concept for luggage covers in car luggage
compartments. The purpose was to find a new concept, with focus on user
friendliness and environmental sustainability, which automatically opens up for
easy loading of the luggage compartment. The fabric in today's solution is made of
polyester and PVC, a disputed material. It is also examined how to replace PVC
with a suitable material.

luggage cover, four of which were evaluated again in a thorough analysis. The
concept consented to be the best works in the manner of a roller blind, placed just
behind the second row seats with the other end of the fabric attached to inside of the
tailgate. The roller blind is in turn attached to two horizontal arms, which runs
parallel to the side trim panels and arise when the tailgate opens up. In this way, the
luggage cover automatically opens up, allows for easy loading and still closes and
covers all luggage automatically when the tailgate closes.
Different prototypes of this concept have been tested in a Volvo XC90 together with
different fabrics to prove the function and feasibility. The result shows, with easy
usage, great potential although further development needs to be made. Polyester
seems, at its own, to be sufficient and suitable to replace PVC with the possibility
of producing this from 100% renewable resources. (Less)
