Abstract
Tetra Recart is a paperboard-based package used for storing various kinds of food. The paperboard in Tetra Recart is covered with several layers having different functions to protect food from the environment as well as to extend the shelf life of a product. Storage of food with aggressive properties, such as high salt concentrations (> 1 %) in combination with low pH (< 4), has an impact on packaging materials and cause problems such as oxidation of an aluminium layer and loss of adhesion between the layers of plastic and aluminium. Therefore, these types of food products cannot be filled in today’s packaging solutions. Due to expected long shelf life of food products, an accelerated test method mimicking the effects would be beneficial... (More)

Therefore, these types of food products cannot be filled in today’s packaging solutions. Due to expected long shelf life of food products, an accelerated test method mimicking the effects would be beneficial for developing packaging materials with higher resistance. In this thesis, four different formulations with aggressive properties were prepared and used for the accelerated testing by storing in packages of interest. The evolution of food-package interaction was evaluated by inspecting spots on the aluminium foil, measuring adhesion strength between the layers of plastic and aluminium and stress - strain dependencies after storing the four formulations. The packages were stored at 35°C and 60°C from 12 days up to 12 weeks.
It was concluded that the most critical ingredients in the formulations were salt and acids in combination with the addition of an emulsifier that helps the ions reach the aluminium foil. It was also concluded that the polypropylene layer absorbs some of the formulations. The most aggressive formulation with most aggressive impact on the packaging material was formulation 4, however, formulation 1 is the most suitable to use for the accelerated storage tests. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
