There have been many calls for higher education to facilitate a transition towards sustainability, in particular, with a social change dimension. Literature exists on the different learning outcomes and competencies expected of students in this process, but not much is written about learning approaches used within curriculums that can enable social change. This thesis aims to address this issue by establishing key characteristics that would be conducive for learning for social change, conducting a literature review to discover various learning approaches, assessing which ones match these characteristics, and determining how a few key learning approaches can help higher education achieve social change. It is found that community service learning, organizational learning and transformative learning are examples of learning approaches that can be well suited for such a task. They can develop students’ capacities to acknowledge and alter their values, communicate effectively, as well as collaborate. In conducting this research, it is hoped that educators can draw on the findings in aiding students to create social change. (Less)
