Abstract
Integration of immigrants has become a crucial policy-question in Sweden and Western Europe due to the large numbers of immigrants having settled during the last three decades. Previous research has focused on integration policy outcome by studying the design of different policies and programs. A qualitative phenomenological method has been used in order to understand the full experience of Somalis’ integration process and not being steered into normative models that are common in the political science literature. This study addresses the question of how the Somali refugees, which are being better integrated in other countries, experience the integration process into Swedish society. A qualitative phenomenological method has been used in order to understand the full experience of Somalis’ integration process and not being steered into normative models that are common in the political science literature. Five themes have been identified that needs to be taken into consideration for understanding Somalis’ integrations process: communication, employment, cultural differences, commitment, and pre-conceptions & discrimination. What also has emerged from this study is that integration policies that do not take into account how integration policies' outcomes appeal to those who are to be integrated into society, are at risk of being ineffective. The study also suggests that ethnic background is taken into consideration when designing integration policies. (Less)
