Visualizing our galaxy using Virtual Reality and big data

- Abstract
- Big data is becoming ever increasingly important in every kind of scientific field, and data visualization is a big part of gaining an understanding of the data. Exploring data builds on intuition but exploring some data on a 2D screen can remove some of the intuition that is gained by exploring in 3 dimensions. Navigation of data visualization programs are often complex and slow to move through. With the rise of VR, we can explore data faster with greater intuition. The process for developing the system was done iteratively starting with a meeting discussing the current flaws of visualization methods and what one would like to see in a Virtual Reality tool. Then the iterative process proceeded by implementing the features and improvements... (More)

The process for developing the system was done iteratively starting with a meeting discussing the current flaws of visualization methods and what one would like to see in a Virtual Reality tool. Then the iterative process proceeded by implementing the features and improvements discussed. The tool was then tested by the targeted users and then discussion was held on what can be improved. This continued until the final testing phase in which targeted users evaluate how the tool compare to other more standard 2D-tools used in their field. (Less)
