Abstract
Surrogate motherhood is a relatively controversial method of assisted reproduction, as it raises ethical questions about the potential risk of exploitation versus the right to self-determination, if it is done with the child’s best in mind and whether or not it is problematic for the family constellation. The purpose of this paper is to examine the approach to altruistic surrogate motherhood in Swedish party politics throughout the 2010’s, looking at the Moderate Party and the Social Democratic Party.
By using an idea analysis and constructing ideal types for liberal, radical feminist and conservative approaches to surrogate motherhood, the method is to relate statements from the parties to the ideal types in order to see which approach... (More)

The purpose of this paper is to examine the approach to altruistic surrogate motherhood in Swedish party politics throughout the 2010’s, looking at the Moderate Party and the Social Democratic Party.
By using an idea analysis and constructing ideal types for liberal, radical feminist and conservative approaches to surrogate motherhood, the method is to relate statements from the parties to the ideal types in order to see which approach that has been the closest to the party view during given years.
The study shows that the Moderate Party has followed a quite liberal approach throughout, while the Social Democratic Party has been closer to the radical feminist ideal type. Both parties have given most attention to the perspective of the surrogate mother, but with different arguments. The approach of both parties also became more established towards the end of the 2010’s. (Less)
