- In 2009 when President Nasheed began his presidency in the Maldives, he launched a unique environmental project that put the country at the fore front of international environmental politics and the battle against climate change. However, in the past ten years a new picture of the Maldives has occurred where those in power seem to put more effort into development and economic growth than environmental protection. This has created uncertainties regarding their environmental standpoint as well as their position on the international environmental stage.

This essay will examine the international climate discourse of the Maldives and investigate whether it has changed during the last decade. Based on Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis, Clapp and Dauvergne’s environmental worldviews as well as Bernstein’s Liberal Environmentalism I aim to analyze a potential shift within the Maldives international environmental discourse. I also want to examine whether the country’s discourse was impacted by societal structures or norms. My conclusion is that there have been discursive shifts within the Maldivian discourse over the past ten years. I also find that one of Clapp and Dauvergne’s environmental worldviews ,institutionalists, has been the dominant discourse type throughout the whole period. Lastly, by using Fairclough’s social practice and Bernstein’s theory, I understand that the liberal normcomplex within liberal environmentalism can be seen as a structure that has impacted the Maldivian environmental discourse.
