Sustainable occupations and health in a life course perspective
- Abstract (Swedish)

(Less) - Abstract
- Background: Around 46 million people worldwide have been diagnosed with
dementia. Since this disease is incurable, the medical field supports people with dementia (PwD) by helping them conduct their daily activities. Additionally, healthcare professionals aim to improve PwDs’ perceptions of personal health. Few studies explore the effect that music has on PwD and their impairments. This literature review examines how music activities can affect PwD according to the person-environment-occupation (PEO) model.
Aim: This study maps music activities as interventions for PwD and examines how they correspond to PwD from an occupational therapy perspective through the PEO model.

Aim: This study maps music activities as interventions for PwD and examines how they correspond to PwD from an occupational therapy perspective through the PEO model.
Method: A literature review of thirteen qualitative and quantitative studies from the databases Cinahl, Pubmed and PsycINFO were conducted using deductive data analysis processing through the PEO model.
Findings: Within the PEO model, most findings were from cognitive abilities within the person component and social environment within the environmental component. Since 2014, research conducted in correspondence of music to dementia has limited findings within the activity component of the PEO model. Participating in music activities for PwD showed significant improvements in memory, attention span and concentration as well as an increase of social participation and a settling effect.
Conclusion: This study highlights that music activities are used as interventions for PwD. These interventions improve their perceptions of health and occupational performance. Most studies have a substantial focus on how music activities impact the person component of the PEO model. However, these studies have a limited focus on the environment and activity component, which are both essential to occupational therapy. (Less)
