Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
This study aimed to examine which discourses of what constitutes the good life are available to young adults in Sweden, what subject positions these discourses offer, as well as which constructions of satisfaction are contained within these discourses. This was done by using a Foucauldian discourse analysis on interviews carried out within the research project SOL-2. Three discourses were identified: the discourse of well-being, the discourse of goodness, and the discourse of aspiration. Within the discourse of well-being, the good life was constructed as being well, and satisfaction was constructed as feeling good. Within the discourse of goodness, the good life was constructed as being a good person, and satisfaction was constructed as being grateful for what one has. Within the discourse of aspiration, the good life was constructed as moving forward and becoming better, and satisfaction was constructed as stagnation. This construction of satisfaction received special attention, as it illustrated the lack of a resting subject position compatible with the discourse’s construction of the good life. These results were discussed in relation to Foucault’s theories on power, discourse and society. Possible implications for positive and clinical psychology, as well as the value of understanding science as discourses, were discussed. (Less)
