Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to create a deepened and nuanced understanding of how professional musicians experience and feel about tinnitus as a phenomenon, and the potential consequences tinnitus could have in different aspects of life. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight professional musicians. Thematic analysis was conducted, and five overarching themes with ten sub-categories were identified. Results showed that acceptance together with practical tools were important coping strategies. Young musicians seemed to be more risk-aware than older musicians. The participants experienced tinnitus as limiting, but no one expressed serious illness or thoughts of abandon their careers. Tinnitus was a topic of conversation among... (More)

The participants experienced tinnitus as limiting, but no one expressed serious illness or thoughts of abandon their careers. Tinnitus was a topic of conversation among musicians, but only at a superficial level. Tinnitus caused the most suffering in initial stage, to later decrease in discomfort with time. The discussion highlighted coping, help-seeking behavior, social discourse and generational differences with a basis in current research. The conclusion was that tinnitus affects musicians both physically and mentally, in and outside of work. Future studies should examine musicians’ coping strategies and mental health in relation to tinnitus, and prioritize musicians who are forced to end their musical careers because of tinnitus. (Less)
