Water quality and water availability at Gårdstånga Nygård

- Abstract
- The report investigated partly how agriculture on and near Gårdstånga Nygård affected the water quality in nearby surface water bodies during the period of testing, and partly whether the supply of water in the Rödabäck river basin is large enough to enable the construction of a well-functioning irrigation pond. The water quality was evaluated by collecting water samples in the field, reading the values of these samples for various water quality parameters and finally an evaluation of said values.
The conclusion of the study on water quality was that it was not possible to find any reason to believe that agriculture at and near Gårdstånga Nygård had any considerable negative effect on the water quality of the nearby surface water bodies... The conclusion that could be drawn as a result of the study on the availability of water in the river basin was that a study in the form included in this report is not accurate enough to say with sufficient certainty whether the availability of water in the river basin is large enough to enable the construction of an effective irrigation pond. - Without water no food can be produced, which is why it is of utmost importance that we as humans put large efforts towards managing the water that is available to us. As the temperatures on earth are increasing more water is evaporating which means that further strains are put on the production of food. Because of this it is essential for the agricultural industry to within a near future find a more efficient way to manage water that needs to be used for irrigation without harming the surrounding environment. One way to improve the availability of water for irrigation is through the construction of water reservoirs such as ponds or wetlands.

On a farm called Gårdstånga Nygård located in the south of Sweden an irrigation pond is planned to be constructed during the year of 2020. Because of this fact it was relevant to investigate whether or not said pond is probable to serve its purpose as an irrigation pond considering the availability of water in the area within this project. A lack of available information concerning the water quantity present in the area meant that this project could not reach any conclusions concerning the functionality of the future constructed pond.
The project also included investigating to which extent the growing of food in the area surrounding the previously mentioned farm was thought to be affecting the water quality of the surface water in the area during the first half of 2020. This investigation was carried out by collecting water samples in the field and later testing said water samples for a variety of water quality indicators in a laboratory. The conclusion that could be drawn from the testing of the water quality indicators was that the crop production at Gårdstånga Nygård during the first half of 2020 was carried out in a way that did not have any significant negative effects on the water quality of the surface water in the area.
