RNs experience of National Early Warning Score NEWS- Qualitative processing of text in a survey study

Abstract
Background: After National Early Warning Score was introduced in 2015, indications of inconsistencies in adherence to the National Early Warning Score was found.
Aim: To describe registered nurses’ experience of National Early Warning Score.
Methods: A qualitative content analysis using the method “ad hoc” to analyze 406 notes from one open question about registered nurses’ experience of National Early Warning Score, included in a survey study.
Results: Four main categories capturing the registered nurses’ experiences emerged: registered nurses’ general opinion of National Early Warning Score, clinical judgement, adherence and adjustment.

Conclusion: Registered nurses’ were well familiar with National Early Warning Score and they described that it was a relevant instrument in the assessment of a deteriorating patient, especially for new registered nurses’ since experienced registered nurses’ relied more on clinical judgement. Doctors’ were the ones that were the least familiar with National Early Warning Score instrument which decreased the adherence.
Relevance to clinical practice: Regular practical training for all health-workers is needed to ensure that all patients are assessed according to National Early Warning Score regardless of who is caring for them. (Less)
