The aim of this study has been to examine social workers reflections about their perceived opportunity to influence at work based on different components that are of significance regarding influence. The study is based on nine semi-structured interviews with social workers that work within social services with either children, elderly or the disabled. By dividing different components into two groups (internal components that exist inside the social worker and external components that exist outside the social worker) made it possible for us to analyse several components one by one, but also to analyse the interaction between the different components. These components have come to life through the gathered empirical material. By using Habermas’s (1996) theory of communicative action, concepts derived from Alvesson and Svenningsson’s (2007) and Hofstede and Hofstede’s (2005) reasoning about organizational culture, different concepts from Bourdieu's (2019) theory about symbolic capital and Scheff’s (2000) theory of shame as analytic tools enabled a deeper analysis of the components that are essential for social workers perceived opportunity to influence at work. Eight components have been found through the empirical material in terms of three internal; experience, characteristics and communication skills and five external; organization, politicians, management, colleagues and forum. The external components are generally considered to have a higher significance than the internal due to power aspects and systematics within the organization. The results show that the components of organization and management are of the highest significance and that these two components seem to largely constitute a prerequisite for the significance of the other components, both internal and external. When there is an interaction between the internal and external components where they complement each other, the perceived possibility of influencing at work seems to increase. (Less)
