Abstract
The aim of this study is to analyze how the music educational program El Sistema at the Malmö School of Arts is portrayed in media outlets and in official documents (20112017). This is done through a critical ideology analysis of main strategy-documents produced by key actors, as well as a theoretical framework constructed from critical theory concerning ideology.

The result shows that El Sistema is stated as a targeted political effort with aspirations of being an integration project, active in multi-ethnic suburbs and deprived areas in the Swedish society. The result shows that there are underlying values and ideologies of El Sistema’s capacity to have these societal effects.

El Sistema is foremost described with positive value... (More)

The result shows that there are underlying values and ideologies of El Sistema’s capacity to have these societal effects.

El Sistema is foremost described with positive value terms and culture is mainly considered and portrayed as an investment and not a cost. At the same time, underlying tensions seem to exist between El Sistema and the traditional music education at Malmö School of Arts. This is especially visible when it comes to how El Sistema is described and portrayed, either as being part of Malmö School of Arts or more as an entity of its own. This creates some confusion when the project is being communicated through media outlets with risk of downplaying the role of the Swedish public music and arts schools.

Key words: critical realism, document analysis, El Sistema, instrumental education, Malmö school of Arts, music education. (Less)
Popular Abstract (Swedish)

(More)

(Less)
