Critical factors to consider for an incumbent when adopting a platform strategy: A single case study of an incumbent in the discrete manufacturing industry

Abstract
The purpose with this thesis is to give clarity in the process when adopting a platform strategy for an incumbent by using a single case in the discrete manufacturing industry. Moreover, it seeks to extend the current yet limited research regarding strategical and organizational implications for incumbents when adopting a platform strategy. Therefore, the research question for this thesis is: Which are the critical factors to consider for an incumbent when adopting a platform strategy? The purpose with this thesis is to give clarity in the process when adopting a platform strategy for an incumbent by using a single case in the discrete manufacturing industry. Moreover, it seeks to extend the current yet limited research regarding strategical and organizational implications for incumbents when adopting a platform strategy. Therefore, the research question for this thesis is: Which are the critical factors to consider for an incumbent when adopting a platform strategy? To answer the research question, an exploratory approach has been applied. This has been combined with an abductive reasoning in a single case study strategy. In total 10 interviews were conducted by using both explorative and semi-structured approaches. The data was analyzed by using a qualitative data analysis process resulting in 5 main themes and 12 sub-themes making the foundation of the critical factors. In the end, 5 critical factors were identified: (1) Expand the focus from internal to external, (2) Enable new ways for cooperation towards greater openness, (3) Introduce complementary metrics and KPIs, (4) Create a common view of the characteristics of the platform and (5) Consider initiatives colliding with current business model and brand. These factors contribute to the current literature regarding incumbents adopting a platform strategy and will facilitate the future implementation of the platform strategy at the case company. (Less)

Syftet med denna studie är att ge klarhet i adoptionsprocessen av en plattformsbaserad affärsstrategi för ett etablerat företag genom en fallstudie i den diskreta tillverkningsindustrin. Till sist, identifierades 5 kritiska faktorer: (1) Utöka fokus från internt till externt, (2) Möjliggör nya samarbeten mot en större öppenhet, (3) Introducera komplementerande mätvärden och KPIer (4) Skapa en gemensam bild av plattformsmodellen (5) Överväg initiativ som kolliderar med nuvarande affärsmodeller och varumärke. Dessa faktorer bidrar till de nuvarande litteraturen om etablerade företag som implementerar plattformsbaserade affärsstrategier samt kommer underlätta för den framtida implementeringen för företaget som deltog i fallstudien.
