- This study centers around museum ethics with a focus on provenance research and how changing attitudes, both societal and sector-based, has affected the representation, communication and usage of provenance research and objects with provenance concerns within the public museum sector. - This study centers around museum ethics with a focus on provenance research and how changing attitudes, both societal and sector-based, has affected the representation, communication and usage of provenance research and objects with provenance concerns within the public museum sector. The aim of this study is to gain increased and deeper knowledge about this phenomenon and the underlying processes that have influenced it. The theoretical perspectives for this thesis was acquired from the academic fields of cultural science and sociology and the theories all assume, to some extent, a social constructionist approach. To facilitate the study’s aim of gaining a deeper understanding of the described phenomenon and its underlying processes a Critical Discourse Analysis, based on Norman Fairclough’s three dimensional process, was conducted on a case study focusing on one specific museum - the Victoria & Albert Museum. The research material was primarily focused on openly available digital texts from V&A's digital platform, or digital texts published on other public platforms where employees of the V&A, or the V&A as an institution was the original sender. In addition to this, non-digital material from the V&A was also collected.
The study’s results showed that there were several recurring discursive themes that the intended reader was repeatedly exposed to. One of the main themes centered around how changing attitudes and cultural norms concerning museum and collection ethics has influenced how collectors relate to the purpose and usage of provenance research and objects with provenance concerns. The study also shows that the V&A places great importance on accentuating a narrative linked to its historical, present and future efforts concerning provenance research and that the V&A repeatedly emphasize this as an obvious part of their day-to-day operations and their institutional identity. The study suggests that the increased expectation and demand for institutional openness and transparency is one societal change that can be attributed to have had an effect on the fore mentioned phenomenon, and in turn an effect on the V&A's external communication. The study also suggests that the fore mentioned phenomenon can be seen as part of an overall social and ideological change in the museum sector, and society in large, concerning cultural ethics.
