Resan ingen klarar ensam - Psykodynamiska terapeuters upplevelser i psykoterapi vid psykossjukdom
(2020) PSPR14 20201Department of Psychology
- Abstract (Swedish)
Somliga patienter orsakar... (More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to explore psychodynamic therapists' experiences in psychotherapy with patients suffering from psychosis. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted. The material was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, resulting in four main themes: The therapist’s own journey, A distant and fragile destination, Meeting in a mutual arena and Contagions and travel vaccinations. The interviewees described that the different and intense elements encountered in the field of psychosis exerted an attractive force in their beginning careers, while later clinical experiences had them develop a more genuine and personal therapeutic stance. Intrinsic challenges were related to establishing contact and a working... (More)

Intrinsic challenges were related to establishing contact and a working alliance. Some patients induce exhausting, sedative and confusing reactions, and some react with strong resistance towards reality orienting interventions. The therapists could experience themselves being controlled or attacked; while the responsibility of holding the patient’s uncontained suffering felt overwhelming. In contrast, it was expressed how a sense of deepened contact and emancipation had emerged through meeting and sharing an experience within a psychotic state, as well as by confronting the patient’s control and demonstrating one’s separate individuality. Access to peer support, supervision and self-therapy was described as important functions in managing the intense processes and confusing stalemates inherent in practice. Also stated was how clinical engagement with psychotic conditions had given rise to revitalizing and meaningful, deeply touching experiences. (Less)
