Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the social effects of an absent parent during childhood and later in life. An absent parent is here understood as a parent who exists in life but who for some reason is not present in the child's life. Six adults were interviewed; three women and three men. The method used was qualitative. In all cases, the absent parent had been the father. The analysis was made using the theoretical approaches of Antonovsky’s Sense of Coherence and identity. The study shows that the interviewees' identity process was clearly linked to the processes of coherence in the relationship with the present parent. Two groups among the interviees were defined: for those who described the present parent in terms of emotional... (More)
The purpose of this study was to explore the social effects of an absent parent during childhood and later in life. Two groups among the interviees were defined: for those who described the present parent in terms of emotional stability and predictability of care, felt to be little, or not at all, affected by the father's absence. The effects on their own health and development, as well as their relationships and their own parental ability were described as non-existent or very small. The interviewees who described the present parent as emotionally unstable, unpredictable and with a lack of ability to care, on the other hand experienced that the absence of the father had significant negative consequences during upbringing and later in life. Consequences such as problematic relationships or experiences of lacking in their own parental ability were here more commonly highlighted. (Less)
