Abstract
This project started with an exploration of how logistics that is created by design could be re-imagined, leaving some material of an product to be sourced by the user locally. Saving weight and space during transportation, but also to generate another kind of user participation and knowledge

This project started with an exploration of how logistics that is created by design could be re-imagined, leaving some material of an product to be sourced by the user locally. Saving weight and space during transportation, but also to generate another kind of user participation and knowledge

With this in mind, a collaboration with IKEA was initiated with the end goal to do a product for their short term “VITALITY” collection with the theme “Space”.

The topic of circular economy became an interesting aspect of the initial framework and a base for the initial research. The first brief became to explore how a product can embody qualities of circular thinking without interfering with the current structure of IKEA, still keeping references to space.

The conclusion became to further explore the idea of utilizing local resources, where air was determined to be the resource most suitable for mass-production with strong references to the space theme.

People who live in small spaces in dense cities tend to move often, with furniture that makes both moving and living a hassle due their weight and size. After field trips and interviews to various constellations of small-scale living, the ambition became to create a lightweight and flexible furniture, utilizing and highlighting the qualities of air.

Air shelf is inspired by a technique used in a concept to create temporary bridges in case of natural disasters. A light, but strong surface is used in combination with inflatable volumes and wires to rapidly create a strong construction to support transportation for vehicles. This technique was re-evaluated and scaled down to be used as shelves to provide a lightweight and flexible storage unit.

The shelves consists out of a thin plastic sheet that becomes functional thanks to an inflatable volume supported by two strings, enclosed by fabric that keeps everything in place. When deflated, the construction is easy to fold to stow away or transport. The shelves are height adjustable and the aluminum frame enables both support for stored objects and the opportunity to highlight them.

The function of every component of the shelves is shown in a clear way and enables easy separation for recycle and repair. User participation doesn’t stop at the assembly, instead it’s an object that requires care for due to the fact that inflatables, regardless material choice, leaks. (Less)
