Abstract (Swedish)
The thesis aims to analyze the development of the Moderate Coalition Party’s view on immigration and criminal justice policy, based on their party manifestos from 2010 and 2020. To see how their policies have developed the essay will focus on the manifesto parts regarding the two subjects previously mentioned and compare them. The goal is to see if the development can be explained with help from Meguids theoretical framework of strategical choice, which states that center-right parties that have lost a number of voters to right-wing populist parties, try to regain these voters by adapting similar policies as the right-wing populist party. In this case the goal is to see if the Moderate Coalition Party chose to adapt similar policies as the Sweden democrats due to the fact that they have lost a great number of voters to them. By making the comparison between 2010 and 2020, the study shows that a shift has been made by the Moderate Coalition Party since they have approached the Sweden Democrats during the last 10 years when it comes to immigration policy as well as criminal justice policy. The study also shows that this development can very well be explained with help from Meguids theory. (Less)
