Abstract
This thesis investigates four selected online newspaper’s discursive conceptualizations of Sweden and Denmark’s consent-based law. Spanning a total of 20 articles over a three-month period following the enactment of the law, this study draws on the work of Ekstra Bladet, Dagbladet Information, Expressen and Göteborgs-Posten to deconstruct the dominating tendencies each newspaper outlet evokes. Through implementing Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), it follows each outlet’s coverage of the respective law while simultaneously compares the two countries’ coverage. With a theoretical foundation in social constructionism, cultivation theory and post-structural feminism, the thesis identifies which realities of the... (More)
This thesis investigates four selected online newspaper’s discursive conceptualizations of Sweden and Denmark’s consent-based law. With a theoretical foundation in social constructionism, cultivation theory and post-structural feminism, the thesis identifies which realities of the consent-based rape law are created within the found discourses. The analysis highlights both convergences and divergences amongst the newspapers, where those within Denmark and Sweden, respectively, differ minutely in the discourses exerted, regardless of type of newspaper. While Denmark’s coverage was skeptical and concerned about how its enforcement could potentially indict those wrongfully convicted, Sweden’s coverage praised the law as a major step in the fight against inequality, coupled with a greater degree of certainty regarding the law’s impact. Comparatively, the analysis also identifies paralleled logic within all four newspaper’s usage of three overarching themes: the grey areas of the enforcement, its legal effects and how the law should be viewed as a symbol of something bigger than just a paragraph. However, the way in which these themes are addressed diverge depending on country. In summation, this thesis unsilences the oppositional effect that Danish and Swedish coverage possess when discussing their consent-based rape law. (Less)
