Abstract
Veganism has become a more common life choice among adolescents today. As this life choice goes against the prevailing societal norm, vegans are subjected to discrimination. Since adolescence is a sensitive time, it is important to examine how this life choice and the discrimination that accompanies it affects the well-being and identity development of this group.
Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with vegans aged 16 - 20 with the aim of finding out how they perceive that veganism has constructed and affected their identity and well-being. Based on qualitative methodology with a phenomenological approach, a thematic analysis of the collected data was performed, which led to the formulation of three overall themes with... (More)

Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with vegans aged 16 - 20 with the aim of finding out how they perceive that veganism has constructed and affected their identity and well-being. Based on qualitative methodology with a phenomenological approach, a thematic analysis of the collected data was performed, which led to the formulation of three overall themes with associated subcodes.
The results showed that the negative experiences that were identified could be interpreted as expressions of discrimination and as a part of the youth's identity crisis, where especially certain food contexts and being questioned and criticized could lead to difficulties with identity construction as well as negative effects on well-being. Paradoxically, the discrimination strengthened the social identity of the vegan community, which also promoted well-being through support and belonging. Positive contexts such as family, friends and interests constituted protective resources and important social support, which contributed positively to identity construction and well-being.
A central part of the identity construction concerned different types of knowledge that arose in relation to veganism. Knowledge as a turning point, driving force and defence forms a strong internal resource that functions to form identity and which also has a positive impact on well-being as this is a way of tackling life and its difficulties with confidence. Abstract (Swedish)
