Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine what clients experienced as being helpful in psychotherapy, as well as the changes they perceived, through a phenomenological approach. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with six participants who had undergone different types of psychotherapy. Material from the interviews was analyzed using thematic analysis. Two main themes, consisting of four sub-themes each, were identified. The first main theme, Enabling change, considered the conditions the participants perceived as being favorable for being helped by therapy. The second main theme, A changed inner life, a changed life, regarded the content of the therapy, as well as the process of change the therapy initiated. The results show... (More)

The results show that a suitable treatment method, treatment continuity, a good fit with the therapist and the client’s inherent motivation generally were considered to be central conditions for being helped by therapy. Through therapy, the participants achieved a greater insight into their past experiences as well as an increased understanding of their emotions, promoting improved personal relationships. The therapist's affirmation and normalization of the clients’ reactions was perceived as validating. Undergoing therapy instilled hope of improvement. The results support earlier qualitative results of what contributes to a client’s experience of being helped by psychotherapy, such as experiences of insight, exploration of feelings, the therapist’s acceptance as well as inherent motivation.
