Abstract
This essay is a qualitative study examining football as an arena for integration and the method I’ve used is semi-structured interviews to collect my empirical information. The participants in this study are four different leaders from four different sports associations, which all are different in size and are from different places in Sweden. What they have in common is that they all have experience working with football as a tool to unite people. I’ve reached out to them through the organization Sverige United who believes that football is an arena for integration.

The purpose of this study was to examine what pros and cons there are with football as an arena for integration and also look deeper into what it needs for it to work. I have in consideration that the Swedish government and the Swedish Sports Confederation are both pushing that sport is a great platform for different cultures and people to meet and integrate with each other. As a contradiction, there’s research that shows that sports' impact on social life can be, and often are, exaggerated.

With that background, I prepared questions for the interview not knowing what the answers would come to be and after analyzing my empirical material I felt that theories about language, social capital, and norms were fitting to reach a better understanding. The result shows that even though football is spread across the globe and everyone speaks the same language, it’s far from enough to make it a good arena for integration. To be that, it has to offer a community, with open-minded leaders that challenge the norms and values that are in the association in order to perform their social work. (Less)
