- Abstract
- Background: The number of children diagnosed with ADHD has reached about 5 % in Sweden. It is important that children with these symptoms are being diagnosed. ADHD does not only affect the child himself, but also the parents. If ADHD is suspected in a student, the school conducts its own investigation. The school counsellor is available here as a resource. If the school still believes there is a diagnosis, they write a referral to BUP (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry). BUP then makes the final investigation. Counsellors are also available within BUP. Since counsellors within the school and BUP work in different activities, it would have been interesting to see how their tasks differ.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to look into how counsellors in school and BUP view ADHD in their own activities. The purpose is also to look into how much room for manoeuvre they have during the investigation work.
Method: I use a qualitative method and a comparative research design. I interview a number of counsellors within the school and BUP. In the analysis, I compare their answers to find similarities and differences.
Conclusions: The study shows that counsellors within BUP feel that they have a large margin of manoeuvre during the investigation work. However, they are also critical of how much of their working time is spent on investigations. The school counsellors, on the other hand, do not feel involved in the investigation work. However, they are positive about the support that the school can offer students with ADHD today.
Keywords: ADHD, investigation, room for manoeuvre, jurisdiction. (Less)
