- Social workers’ judgements of sexual abuse among siblings
The aim of this study was to investigate which factors relating to 1) the child and family and to 2) the respondent have an impact on social workers’ professional judgments about sexual sibling incest. The study was carried out in the form of an experimental vignette survey (a factorial survey), in which the respondents made judgements about fictitious cases describing various situations of potential sexual sibling incest. The aim of this study was to investigate which factors relating to 1) the child and family and to 2) the respondent have an impact on social workers’ professional judgments about sexual sibling incest. The study was carried out in the form of an experimental vignette survey (a factorial survey), in which the respondents made judgements about fictitious cases describing various situations of potential sexual sibling incest. The judgements included the degree of concern, the need for professional interventions, and the estimated risk for future sexual assaults within the family. The judgements were measured using seven unipolar Likert scales (ranging from 1 to 7). In total, 91 respondents made judgements about 686 experimentally constructed vignettes. The investigated factors included in the vignettes were chosen from previous studies about etymology and professional judgements.
Multilevel linear regression analyses were carried out, using the vignettes variables and the respondent variables as predictors of the judgements. The results showed inter alia that significant coefficients were found for gender of the abused sibling (higher judgements for sisters than brothers), abusers use of force, cooperation abilities in mother, type of sexual act and gender of the social worker (women judged higher worry, need and risk comparing to men). The measures taken from parents show positive correlation except for the abusing sibling, age and difference in age show no impact on judgements except for need for professional interventions for the younger sibling if the abusing sibling is 12 (compared to 8 years). No significant correlations were found for professional experience, social work degree, familiarity with these cases and role at work. This could be due to a rather small group of respondents and therefore needs further research. (Less)
