Sustainable occupations and health in a life course perspective
- Abstract
- Background: Communication is an interaction between people. Occupational therapists use communication, both verbal and nonverbal to enable important everyday activities for the client.
Purpose: The study was implemented in order to chart the described communication between the occupational therapist and the client with life- changing illness from an eastern and western occupational therapeutic perspective.
Method: A literature review was completed by 12 articles from the databases AMED, CINAHL, PsycINFO and PubMed. A targeted content analysis with deductive approach was used and the articles were analyzed from the western model Model of human occupation (MOHO) and the eastern Kawa model ́s perspective on person, surrounding and activity.... A targeted content analysis with deductive approach was used and the articles were analyzed from the western model Model of human occupation (MOHO) and the eastern Kawa model ́s perspective on person, surrounding and activity. The perspective was linked to the model’s communication concept: nonverbal communication, conversation relation and dialogue.
Result: All articles described communication from a western perspective and could be linked with the MOHO. No communication could be linked with the Kawa model. The result also shows that occupational therapists uses communication with clients in the shape of role play, body language, listening, reflecting, positive feedback, insightful conversations and coaching. Conclusion: The Kawa model can contribute with an eastern perspective and also contribute with a way of communicating with a client based on image and symbols used in a dialogue with the occupational therapists, which western theoretical models lack.
