Sustainable occupations and health in a life course perspective
Abstract (Swedish)

Mest
frekvent utfördes Livsstilsrelaterad- (flertal gånger i veckan) och Rekreativ fysisk aktivitet
(enstaka gånger i veckan).
(Less)
Abstract
Background: Physical activity has positive effects for people with stress related illness, but is
not well studied within occupational therapy and occupational science.
Aim: The aim was to describe to what extent people with stress related illness engage in physical
activity, which types of physical activity they perform and their perceived occupational value
when performing physical activity.
Method: Data was collected through a survey containing 23 questions regarding types of
physical activities, extent of physical activity in relation to current recommendations, and
Occupational value by (OVal-9).

Results: 5 men and 54 women, with stress related illness, from Sweden, were recruited through
digital forums.he majority (67.8%) did not fulfill the recommendations for extent of physical
activity. Lifestyle related- (several times per week) and Recreational physical activity (few times
per week) was performed most frequently. Perceived occupational value (1-7) was generally
rated low (median=3). Fitness related physical activity had the highest Concrete value
(median=5) and Recreational physical activity the highest Total value (median=4).
Conclusion: The majority of the population with stress related illness did not fulfill
recommendations of physical activity, and their perceived occupational value with physical
activities were in general low. Increased knowledge about how people with stress related illness
perform and value physical activity, could guide interventions aimed to increase physical
activity, e.g. by adaptations to support perceived occupational value and meaning. This could
result in continued and increased engagement in physical activity. (Less)
