- Abstract
- This essay is based on an observation, made by the author, that the scenes in Malmö for rap battles and roast battles have actors in common. To identify and discuss why that is, the essay will conduct an aesthetic analysis and compare common tools used by rappers and comedians in the respective scenes. The analysis relies on discussions and theories about music as a performance and the term “musicking” coined by Christopher Small. By drawing inspiration from a performance analysis proposed by Philip Auslander, a new tool for analysis is proposed in the essay. The results of the essay point out the specific tools that is common for rappers and comedians as well as contrasting their respective means and ends. It also offers an explanation of why Malmo was, for a long time both the centre for Swedish comedy and the cradle of Swedish rap battles. (Less)
