Abstract
This research paper investigates notions and values that composers have regard to artificial intelligence and composition. The research is based on a survey that was sent to students and teachers of composition at Malmö Academy of Music. A total of 32 emails were sent, of which 15 were answered. 12 of the informants were students and 3 were teachers. Of the 32 individuals surveyed, the number of teachers was 6. The informants were asked whether they think AI will or will not be used in their respective fields of composition, such as classical or jazz music, and whether AI will or will not become a frequently used and accepted tool that may even replace the composer. They were also asked if they think AI will be beneficial for composition,... (More)

The informants were asked whether they think AI will or will not be used in their respective fields of composition, such as classical or jazz music, and whether AI will or will not become a frequently used and accepted tool that may even replace the composer. They were also asked if they think AI will be beneficial for composition, if the subject is ever discussed at the Academy, if they think educations in composition will change because of AI, and if the common expectations on, and the social standing and economic opportunities of, composers will change as a result of AI. The hypothesis that there is a stigma when it comes to using AI as a tool in composition was confirmed. The results show that the composers at MHM imagine that AI will become part of their everyday life in the future, but what consequences this will entail, there is disagreement. The performances point to a shift where composers in certain fields are replaced or partially replaced by an AI. There was a mixed result of whether AI is considered an asset or not. The topic was also not popular to discuss at MHM, but it was agreed that it would have an impact on future education. Finally, there was no majority who imagined that AI would affect the social and economic status of composers in the future. (Less)
