- Less than a decade ago, Swedish law demanded that a person who wanted to change their legal gender had to be without any ability to reproduce. This demand led to many trans people being forcibly sterilized. Even though the demand is now removed from law, lingering effects continues to affect trans people in their reproductive journey. This study examines barriers faced by trans people in three stages of reproduction: pregnancy, childbirth and parenting. Information on trans people’s experience is gathered through narrative reports, in depth interviews and a literature review of the research field on trans* studies relating to reproductive issues. The information is analyzed through an expanded reproductive justice framework that is developed to include the perspective of trans people. The main finding of this study is that trans people in Sweden are subjected to reproductive injustice due to the cis- and heteronormativity’s governance of reproductive care. Highlighted are also methods that can help mitigate the negative effects, such as birthing plans, safe spaces and the possibility to bring someone with you to health care visits. Lastly, the study gives recommendations for further research in the field of trans people’s reproductive circumstances. (Less)
