Abstract
The purpose of our study was to examine the meaning of the word clan in the Swedish press and social debate in 2020. We have studied how the word clan was used over time and its impact in the newspapers in 2000, 2010, and 2020. We were curious about how the concept clan was presented in the Swedish press. A qualitative approach was chosen, as it offers an interpretive understanding of the word in its context. We used elements of a social constructive perspective on how social problems are understood and created. The theoretical framework, which our work was based upon, is the established and the outsiders, to understand the differential making of social groups. We used elements of a social constructive perspective on how social problems are understood and created. The theoretical framework, which our work was based upon, is the established and the outsiders, to understand the differential making of social groups. The method used was a content analysis, as it allowed us to examine how the words affect our perception of reality. In order to investigate the aim of the study, empirical data were collected from Swedish newspapers. We have used a targeted selection, a so-called theoretical selection where the focus was placed on the collection that was made in order to form a theoretical understanding. What we studied through our analysis was whether there was a definite way to talk about or understand the word clan. When we did our search on the internet, it appeared that the word clan had several definitions. We also found several articles where the word clan was used in different ways over the years. The term clan was, at the time of the investigation, associated with negative aspects such as organized crime and thus, the word clan was attributed with new meanings. Our findings showed that the word clan had moved from a positive remark to something considered negative by the Swedish press. (Less)
