Development of Dense Motion Capture in horses

Abstract
By observing a horse´s shape and movement you can get information about signs
of disease. From a veterinary perspective the progression of new scientific
methods and technological advances towards the field of equine motion and shape
analysis may help with diagnosis, early detection of diseases, improving the
chances of successful treatment and thereby offer overall benefits to the welfare of
horses.

By observing a horse´s shape and movement you can get information about signs
of disease. From a veterinary perspective the progression of new scientific
methods and technological advances towards the field of equine motion and shape
analysis may help with diagnosis, early detection of diseases, improving the

horses.
This master thesis is part of a collaboration between the Swedish University of
Agriculture Sciences (SLU), Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Optics and
Sensing Laboratory of the Max Planck Institute and the company Qualisys with
the common goal to develop and apply a method for dense motion capture in
horses - For shape estimation during motion.
The method of dense motion capture means a great amount of reflective markers
are attached to the horse´s body, which will be recorded and tracked by several
infrared cameras. This will allow capture of the three-dimensional positions of the
markers and provide extensive digital information of the overall shape of the horse
during motion.
The purpose of this master thesis was to design the marker set up, including
determining the total number of markers and the placement pattern of these on the
horses’ bodies.
The methodology of product development used throughout the thesis was derived
from the Double Diamond design process. The final concept of placement pattern
consists of a total of 132 markers. Initially 50 markers are placed based on
anatomical skeletal structures and the placements for the rest of the markers are
abstracted from the positions of these. The final marker set up was used on five
horses during two days of trial. All five horses participating in the trial provided
valuable and unique data collection resulting in a good shape estimation of the
horse during motion. (Less)
