- Relations to time and space - a study of political art in the People’s Park of Malmö
This thesis discusses the historical, political and social relations between an urban park and two types of artworks. The urban park, located in the city of Malmö, is named Folkets Park which is inspired by the Belgian “Maison du people” or in English, People’s Park. Folkets Park have historic ties to the Social Democratic movement however it is at present owned by the municipality of Malmö. The art in focus is located in the park and consists of five busts depicting historic leaders of the Swedish Social Democratic Party as well as a wooden fence which is an official spot for graffiti art.

This thesis discusses the historical, political and social relations between an urban park and two types of artworks. The purpose and use of the Folkets Park as a meeting point for political groups and a place for entertainment affects how these artworks are perceived. The artwork themselves have as well as the park assimilating and dividing effects on the space which makes up the relation between park and art. Both the busts and a selection of the political murals on the wooden fence is analysed in regard to space and time. This analysis is based upon the Marxist theories of Henri Lefebvre whose theories focuses mainly on society’s production of and the availability of space. The method used is a contextual analysis based on the theories and methodology of Anne D’Alleva which clearly makes the relations between space and artwork apparent.
The analysis and discussion of the relations concludes the artworks ability to assimilate and divide. The art embodies the political symbolism that Folkets Park still inherits and being placed in an urban park keeps the art relevant. (Less)
