Abstract
The project explores the application of urban farming in a high-density urban area while considering local characteristics. The site is located on Xiamen Island, China.

China has a long history with agriculture since ancient times. However, with the economic growth and urban sprawl from the 1970s, the farming lands are gradually taken by the modern urban blocks. The urban planning did not consider remaining the farming land in the city and makes the farming away from urban life. Xiamen Island is a place that goes through this historical process and no agricultural lands are left.

Although people’s life is gradually away from farming lands, most Chinese people still dream to have their land to grow foods especially the elders, they try to use the balcony or even rooftop to grow vegetables and fruits in the urban area. In Xiamen, the food supply can satisfy people’s needs in daily life but developing urban farming still has ecological and social benefits.

A new rebuilding plan which demolishes all the buildings located at Hubin (one community at the City center) proposed by the government offers an opportunity to plan and test urban farming in the urban area. In my proposal, a new sustainable community will be build that preserves the old memory place while emerging the urban farming (various plants not only food) on the ground and rooftop. Four strategies are proposed for the design including introducing urban farming to green system, rainwater collection for irrigation, preserve the old characteristics space as well as invite wind and offer shelter from the sun. After the new community is established, every family will own 3 to 5 m² space for farming while they can still enjoy other activities on the street they had before without losing old spatial memories.
