Abstract
The paper at hand concerns itself with the vegetarian organisation known as Svenska Vegetariska Föreningen in the early twentieth-century Sweden. Excerpts are drawn from all issues of the organisations periodical Vegetarianen during 1903 and 1904 to highlight the organisations beliefs concerning meat-eating and personal health. This is used to outline the discursive formations of which the organisation abides,as well as to examine the extent of the discursive formation’s effects on the values of the organisation. Two major aspects of their discourse were identified. The first aspect concerns
the trust that the organisation had for authority, in this case medical authority. The other concerns the non-existence of questioning from the organisation towards health as a phenomenon. These two aspects could be regarded as the main limiters of the organisation’s values, as well as the limiters to what the organisation could regard as “truthful” and “objective.” (Less)
