Utmattning eller hjärntrötthet? En explorativ studie på gymnasieungdomar
(2021) PSPR14 20211Department of Psychology
- Abstract (Swedish)
- Abstract
- Stress-related symptoms are increasing amongst Swedish youth. Long-term stress can give rise to clusters of symptoms, as illustrated by the constructs exhaustion disorderand mental fatigue. This study explored these clusters with self-assessment forms Karolinska Exhaustion Disorder Scale (KEDS) and Mental Fatigue Scale (MFS) in a non-clinical high school population to find out whether the forms might be measuring the same construct, as well as whether Demographic variables, Lifestyle variables and Accumulated stressors, influenced the outcome on the forms. Results indicated that there was a strong positive correlation between the forms themselves, and between the forms and Accumulated stressors. Near half of the participants scored above... (More)

Results indicated that there was a strong positive correlation between the forms themselves, and between the forms and Accumulated stressors. Near half of the participants scored above cut-off for both forms. Gender differences were found wherein women had higher scores than men on both forms. No group differences were found in relation to grade or program. A positive correlation was found between the amount of non-school related screen time and KEDS and MFS, as well as a negative correlation between physical activity and KEDS. No correlations were found between alcohol/drug consumption and score on the forms. Participants with physical or mental illness for more than 6 months, scored higher on both forms compared to otherwise healthy individuals, while participants who have at some point sustained a head injury which required professional care, did not. A majority of the participants believed their scores were affected by the global pandemic (Covid-19). Thedesign of this study does not allow for causal claims. (Less)
