- Abstract
- The question of what makes people start using drugs often arouses strong emotions. This is because it is closely linked to another question, namely what can be done to counteract it. Therefore the aim of this study was to examine the subjective experience of the development of substance abuse. The experiences came from people who defined themselves as former drug addicts. By listening to podcasts where former addicts get to describe their subjective experience we got access to their stories and could answer the aim and issues of the study. The method chosen for this study was a qualitative content analysis of nine different life stories told by former drug addicts in podcasts. The theories used to analyze the empirical

By listening to podcasts where former addicts get to describe their subjective experience we got access to their stories and could answer the aim and issues of the study. The method chosen for this study was a qualitative content analysis of nine different life stories told by former drug addicts in podcasts. The theories used to analyze the empirical
data was Goffman’s theory about stigma and to further deepen the analysis Becker's theory about outsiders was utilised. The theories illustrated how stigma and social deviance affects the progression of the substance abuse. The results of the study showed that for our respondent substance abuse is the result of a process that has already begun before the first contact with drugs. Our respondents suffered from mental illness and because of their illness they turned to drugs in search of an answer. Their first experiences of using drugs were strictly positive which made them continue using drugs for experimental purposes. Eventually our respondents' substance abuse intensified, and they entered a subculture with other drug addicts where the development of the abuse proceeded. (Less)
