- This master’s thesis examines discursive problem representations of involuntary childlessness in official government documents related to the medicalisation of involuntary childlessness in Sweden. A feminist and poststructuralist policy analysis is carried out using the methodological framework “What is the problem represented to be?” in combination with theoretical concepts from medicalisation and biopolitical theory, as well as previous research about governmental politics and legislation on biological reproduction and involuntary childlessness. The problem representation of involuntary childlessness as a medical problem is the most prominent problem representation in the analysed material, and the study discusses pros and cons with this conceptualisation. The study contributes with knowledge and reflection on how involuntary childlessness – regardless of its medical conceptualisation – is a central concept to both critically examine governmental power, and to envision future feminist goals.
