Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore how hospital social workers have experienced that the recently established professional certification has affected their working situation and their status within health care. In my study i used semi-structured interviews with five hospital social workers from one clinic. I then used thematic analysis to identify five themes which were: ”Social workers in a medical context”, ”Demarcation around the hospital social workers profession in health care”, ”Unchanged way of working”, ”Self-image, recognition and status” and ”Connection between practical work and research”. The themes were analysed with Beckman’s theory about battles of authority and Selander’s theory about professionalization strategies.

In summary the study showed that the other professions in the hospital is not aware that the hospital social workers has received a professional certification. The hospital social workers daily work hasn’t been affected where both the social workers who has recived the professional certification and the ones who has not are allowed to do the same work. The hospital social workers feel that their daily work is well-functioning and doesn’t give any indications of wanting to change it. At the same time they feel that their assignment in the hospital is inexplicit to the other professions whom they work with. They are not a classical medical profession which they mean increases the unclearness about what the professional certification means for the profession. The social workers them self also feel like there should be better information regarding what actions could lead to loosing the professional certification. The un-awareness among the other professions about the professional certification causes their status to remain unchanged. Although their working situation has not been affected in relation to the other professions in the hospital the social workers feel that it has affected their self-image and that it has helped them become a stronger profession within their own professional group. They also think that the student who will attend the education to get the professional certification will get a better knowledge about what their assignment is within health care and that it will eventually lead to a stronger profession.
